Introduction
Welcome to Music Theory Practice ("we," "our," or "us"). We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal data. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our website at music-theory-practice.com.
Information We Collect
We collect the following types of information:
- Account Information: If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google. Signing in is optional — every practice tool on the site works without an account. We use this information to save your scores to leaderboards, to show your own progress on your private profile page, and — if you choose to create a shareable result link for an assignment — to identify you on that verification page so a teacher can confirm the result is genuinely yours. We do not use it to send you marketing email, and we never sell it or share it with advertisers.
- Newsletter Email Address: If you subscribe to our newsletter using one of the signup forms on the site, we store the email address you gave us, the date, and which page you subscribed from. This is kept separately from any account you may have, and is used only to send you the newsletter and the free resources you asked for. You can unsubscribe at any time. You must be 13 or older to subscribe.
- Game Data: When signed in, we store your game scores, accuracy statistics, and timestamps on our servers to display on leaderboards.
- Usage Data: We may collect anonymous usage statistics such as pages visited, time spent on site, and interaction patterns to improve our service.
- Device Information: We may collect information about your device type, browser, and operating system for compatibility purposes.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and maintain our music theory practice tools
- Display your scores on public leaderboards (using your display name and, if you signed in with Google, your profile picture)
- Track your personal progress across game sessions
- Improve and optimize our website and user experience
- Respond to your inquiries and provide support
- Send our email newsletter to people who subscribed to it, and deliver the free resources they asked for
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
- Google Firebase: We use Firebase for authentication (Google Sign-In) and database services. Firebase is operated by Google and subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
- Google AdSense: We display advertisements through Google AdSense. Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to our website or other websites. You can opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ad Settings.
- Amazon Associates: Our book recommendations may contain affiliate links to Amazon. Amazon has its own Privacy Notice.
Cookies and Tracking
We use cookies and similar technologies for:
- Essential Cookies: To remember your preferences (such as dark mode) and login status
- Analytics Cookies: To understand how visitors use our site
- Advertising Cookies: Used by Google AdSense to serve relevant advertisements
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Note that disabling cookies may affect certain features of our site.
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored securely using Google Firebase's infrastructure, which employs industry-standard security measures. Leaderboard scores are publicly visible, showing your display name and, if you signed in with Google, your profile picture. Your email address is never shown on a leaderboard, and it is never shown to other visitors browsing the site.
Shareable result links (assignment verification): if you choose to create a shareable link to one of your results — for example to submit a score as homework — that link opens a verification page showing your name, your email address, the game you played, and your result. Your email address is shown there on purpose. It is what allows a teacher to confirm that the result belongs to you and was not copied from another student or invented, which is the entire point of the verification page. Creating one of these links is always your choice, and no link is created unless you ask for one. Anyone who has the link can open it, so share it only with the teacher or people you intend to see it.
We retain your account data for as long as your account remains active, and newsletter addresses until you unsubscribe. You can request deletion of your data by contacting us, or delete it yourself from your profile page.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Opt out of personalized advertising
- Use our site without signing in (scores won't be saved to leaderboards)
- Unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time — every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us to remove you by using the contact details on our About page
- Decline the newsletter and keep using every feature of the site, including leaderboards
Children's Privacy
Our service is intended for users of all ages interested in learning music theory. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without parental consent. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us.
Our newsletter is not directed at children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not subscribe — ask a parent or teacher to subscribe instead. If we learn that a subscriber is under 13, we will delete that address from our list.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
