Modes of the Major Scale, Explained

A mode is the major scale heard from a different home note, and there are seven of them. This page charts all seven with their formulas and characteristic notes, shows the two ways musicians think about them, and gives a reliable method for naming the mode of any melody.

What Is a Mode?

A mode is what you get when you play the notes of a major scale but treat a different note as home. Play all the white keys on a piano from C to C and you get C major. Now play the same white keys from D to D. Same seven notes — but everything sounds different. The music now gravitates toward D, and the pattern of whole steps and half steps around that new home note creates a new color. That D-to-D scale is called D Dorian, the second mode of the major scale.

Since a major scale has seven notes, there are seven possible starting points — and therefore seven modes. Each has a Greek name inherited from medieval music theory, and each has a distinct personality that shows up everywhere from Miles Davis to movie scores to classic rock.

The key idea to hold onto: a mode is not defined by the notes alone. It's defined by which note feels like the tonal center. Keep that in mind and the rest follows naturally.

1 The Seven Modes at a Glance

Here are all seven modes, in scale-degree order. The formula column shows how each mode differs from the major scale built on the same note — this is the column that tells you how each mode actually sounds. The characteristic note is the single note that gives the mode its flavor.

Two modes you already know: Ionian is just the major scale, and Aeolian is the natural minor scale. If you've played in major and minor keys, you've been playing modes all along — the other five are new colors, not a new system.

Notice that Lydian and Mixolydian change only one note from major — that's why they're the easiest modes to hear and to use. Dorian changes two, Aeolian three, Phrygian four, and Locrian five. Locrian is the odd one out: because its 5th is lowered, its home chord is diminished and unstable, so whole pieces in Locrian are vanishingly rare. It remains worth knowing for analysis and exams.

2 Two Ways to Think About Modes

Every mode can be understood from two directions, and fluent musicians use both.

The Relative View (same notes, new home)

D Dorian = the notes of C major, played from D. This view is useful for finding the notes quickly: to build any mode, just borrow the key signature of its parent major scale. E Phrygian? That's the 3rd mode, so its parent is C major — all white keys, starting on E.

The Parallel View (same home, changed notes)

D Dorian = a D major scale with ♭3 and ♭7. This view compares each mode to the major scale on the same tonic — and it's the one that best conveys each mode's sound. You already know what D major sounds like; Dorian is that sound with two specific notes darkened.

Here's why the parallel view matters so much. The relative view tempts you to hear D Dorian as "C major in disguise" — but your ear doesn't experience it that way at all. When D is the tonal center, the F♯ you'd expect from D major gets replaced by F♮, and that lowered 3rd is what you actually hear. The mode's personality lives in the differences from its parallel major, not in its shared notes with some other key.

A practical workflow: use the relative view to spell the mode (grab the parent key signature), then immediately switch to the parallel view to understand what you're hearing (which degrees are raised or lowered from major). Do both every time and modes stop being abstract.

3 Hear Them Bright to Dark

Scale-degree order (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian…) is how modes are usually listed, but it is an unhelpful order for the ear. Instead, arrange the modes from brightest to darkest:

This ordering has an elegant property: each mode differs from its neighbor by a single flattened note. Start from Lydian (major with ♯4, the brightest) and lower the 4th to get Ionian. Lower the 7th and you have Mixolydian. Lower the 3rd: Dorian. Lower the 6th: Aeolian. Lower the 2nd: Phrygian. Finally lower the 5th and you arrive at Locrian, the darkest.

Try this at a keyboard: play C Lydian, then C Ionian, then C Mixolydian, and so on — all starting from the same C. You'll hear the light dim one notch at a time. Ten minutes of this exercise does more for the modal ear than memorizing formulas alone, because it converts the chart above into an actual continuum of sound.

4 How to Tell What Mode You're In

This is the question that brings most people to modes: you're looking at a melody, a riff, or a solo scale, and you want to know — what mode is this? Here's the reliable two-step method.

  1. Find the tonal center by ear. Play or sing the passage and notice where the music resolves — the note that feels like rest, the one phrases keep landing on, the note the bass keeps returning to. That note is your tonic. This step must come first: the same seven notes can be any of seven modes, so the notes alone can't answer the question. Only the tonal center can.
  2. Compare to the parallel major. Now compare the notes in use against the major scale built on that tonic. Which degrees are lowered or raised? Match the differences to the formula column in the chart above. Everything matches major except a ♭7? Mixolydian. You find ♭3 and ♭7 but a natural 6? Dorian. A ♭2 jumps out? Phrygian (or Locrian if the 5th is lowered too).

One warning from years of grading theory exams: the most common mistake is skipping the first step and assuming the first note of the melody is the tonic. It often isn't. Trust where the music resolves, not where it starts.

Why Modes Matter Beyond the Theory Test

Modes are among the most widely applicable topics in music theory. Improvisers use them to choose notes over chords — Dorian over minor sevenths, Mixolydian over dominants, Lydian over major sevenths with a raised 11th. Songwriters use them to move beyond plain major and minor with a single altered note. Film composers rely heavily on Lydian and Phrygian.

The payoff comes when the modes stop being seven charts and become seven sounds you recognize on contact — the same way you recognize major and minor now. Drill the formulas, sing them bright to dark, and check your work with the identifier until that happens.
