How to Identify Intervals by Ear
You do not need perfect pitch to name intervals by ear — you need relative pitch, and relative pitch is trainable. This page gives the practice loop: anchor a few intervals to songs you already know, drill ascending intervals to about 90% accuracy, add descending intervals, then work up to harmonic intervals.
Why Intervals Are the Foundation of Ear Training
Every ear-training skill you'll ever want—transcribing melodies, recognizing chords, improvising by ear, singing at sight—rests on one ability: hearing the distance between two notes and naming it. That distance is an interval, and interval recognition is where serious ear training begins.
Interval recognition is a trainable skill. You don't need perfect pitch (very few professional musicians have it). You need relative pitch—the ability to judge distances—and relative pitch improves steadily with regular practice. Small, consistent sessions build it. This guide gives you the practice plan.
The Reference-Song Method — and Its Limits
The classic entry point is the reference-song method: attach each interval to the opening of a melody you already know cold. The first two notes of "Happy Birthday" are a major second. "Greensleeves" opens with a minor third. The Star Wars theme leaps a perfect fifth. When a drill plays an unknown interval, you compare it to these stored anchors: "That felt like the start of Star Wars—perfect fifth."

The limitation. Almost all the famous reference songs give you ascending melodic intervals—two notes, one after the other, going up. But intervals also come down (descending), and they come stacked (harmonic—both notes at once). A descending minor third does not sound like "Greensleeves," and a harmonic minor third doesn't sound like either. Each direction needs its own anchors and its own drilling. That's why the method below is a sequence, not a single exercise.
1 Anchor 3–4 Intervals with Songs
Don't start with all twelve intervals—start with three or four that sound obviously different from each other. A good opening set:
- Minor 2nd — the Jaws theme (tense, creeping)
- Major 3rd — "Oh When the Saints" (bright, open)
- Perfect 5th — Star Wars (heroic, stable)
- Perfect octave — "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (a big, clean leap)
For each one, sing the song's opening, then sing just the first two notes alone, then sing them again while naming the interval out loud. Singing matters more than listening here—if you can produce an interval with your voice, your ear has internalized it. Ten minutes of this and your first anchors are set.
2 Drill Ascending Until You Hit ~90%
Now put the anchors under pressure. Open the ascending interval ear trainer and drill your starting set. The loop for every question is the same:
- Listen to the two notes.
- Sing them back (out loud or in your head).
- Match the sound to one of your reference songs.
- Answer, and pay attention to misses—wrong answers teach more than right ones.
When you're answering around 90% correctly, add one new interval to the set and keep going. The 90% rule protects you from the most common ear-training mistake: drilling twelve intervals at once, scoring 40%, and concluding the skill is out of reach. Nearly always the problem is the size of the set, not the student's aptitude.
A good session is short. Five to ten minutes, once or twice a day. Ear training fatigues fast, and accuracy collapses when you're tired—which trains guessing, not hearing. Stop while you're still sharp.
3 Add Descending Intervals
Once ascending intervals feel steady, begin the same process with descending intervals. They are genuinely a separate skill: the same distance falling has a different emotional shape than it does rising, and your ascending anchors won't fire.
Build a small set of descending anchors the same way (the reference songs page includes descending examples—"Hot Cross Buns" falls a major second to start, and the "Star-Spangled Banner" opens by falling a minor third), then drill them in the descending interval ear trainer with the same listen–sing–match–answer loop and the same 90% rule.
A useful backup when no anchor comes to mind: mentally flip the interval. If you hear a descending leap, sing the lower note back up to the higher one and identify that ascending version. It's slower than direct recognition—treat it as scaffolding you'll eventually drop, not a permanent strategy.
4 Graduate to Harmonic Intervals
The final stage: both notes at the same time. This is the hardest kind of interval to identify, because there's no motion to follow—just a single combined sound whose color you have to judge. It's also the most valuable, because harmonic hearing is chord hearing. Every triad and seventh chord you'll ever identify is a stack of harmonic intervals.
Work through the harmonic interval ear trainer starting from the extremes, which are easiest to tell apart: the sharp dissonance of the minor 2nd, the hollow purity of the perfect 5th and octave, the sweetness of the 3rds and 6ths.
- When stuck, un-stack it: sing the lower note, then the upper note, turning the harmonic interval back into a melodic one you already know.
- Sort by texture first: is it harsh (2nds, 7ths), sweet (3rds, 6ths), or hollow (4ths, 5ths, octaves)? Narrowing to a family first makes the final call much easier.

The Long-Term Upgrade: Scale-Degree Hearing
Interval recognition is the on-ramp, but it isn't how experienced musicians hear most real music. In an actual song, notes don't float in space—they live inside a key, and each one has a job. Trained ears hear a note as "the 5th degree of this key" or "sol" faster than they compute "a perfect 4th above the last note."
This is scale-degree hearing, and it's what solfège syllables (do, re, mi…) are for: each syllable names a degree's stable or restless character inside the key. Do feels like home; ti leans upward toward it. Once your interval work is solid, start practicing this too—hold a key in your ear, hear a note, and name its degree. Don't treat the two methods as rivals. Intervals give you precise distances; scale degrees give you context and speed. The interval work you're doing now is exactly what makes the degrees learnable later.
Common Confusion Pairs (and How to Break Them)
Everyone develops the same sticking points. Here's how to attack the big three:
- P4 vs. P5 — Both sound open and stable. When unsure, sing up the Star Wars opening from the bottom note. If the interval you heard matches that arrival, it's the 5th; if the top note lands lower than Star Wars would, it's the 4th. The 5th also feels more grounded and final; the 4th slightly suspended.
- m6 vs. M6 — Both are wide and sweet. Anchor them separately: "The Entertainer" for the minor 6th, the NBC chimes for the major 6th, and drill just these two against each other in your trainer until the misses stop.
- m7 vs. M7 — Both are big and dissonant. Use the resolution test: try to sing the top note up a half step. If it resolves smoothly to a perfect octave, you heard a major 7th (it sits one half step from home—think of the aching leap in "Take On Me"). The minor 7th (Star Trek) doesn't have that same one-half-step ache.
The general recipe for any confusion pair: isolate the two intervals into their own two-answer drill, slow down, sing everything, and let the contrast teach you. Mixed in with ten other intervals, a confusion pair never gets fixed.
A Realistic Timeline
Ear training rewards frequency over duration. Your ear consolidates between sessions—so ten focused minutes a day accomplish more than a single long weekly session. Steady practice usually looks like this:
- Weeks 1–2 Anchor and drill 3–4 ascending intervals to 90%.
- Weeks 3–6 Expand to all ascending intervals within the octave.
- Weeks 6–10 Add descending intervals, small sets first.
- Weeks 10+ Harmonic intervals, then triads and seventh chords.
Your pace will vary—singers and string players often move faster because they already tune intervals by ear daily. What doesn't vary is the shape: small sets, high accuracy, daily repetitions. Progress that feels slow week to week accumulates substantially over months.
