This page generates random 12-tone rows and matrices, and allows the user to notated any transofmration (transposition, inversion, retrograde, and retrograde-inversion). The page opens with a random 12-tone row / matrix automatically generated, and you can use the buttons below to generate "endless" random 12-tone rows and random 12-tone matrices.

The matrix is calculated purely randomly (unsorted), but displayed beginning with P0 at the top left corner (i.e. "sorted by C") and organized from there. You can view the random matrix by clicking the "Show the original (random) matrix" button.

If you prefer to view the matrix with letter notation rather than integer notation, please select the "Letter Notation" button.

Automatically notating the transformations

Using your mouse (or finger if you're on a phone or tablet) tap/hover on the light-blue border to see either the "Prime" (transposed), inversion, retrograde, and retrograde-inversion rows and columns notated on a treble clef staff.
